The Netherlands undergoes a remarkable transformation each year from March to May as its landscape bursts into a riot of colors with vibrant flowers. In the spring of 2024, satellite images captured the stunning spectacle of the Dutch countryside adorned with fields of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and more.
NASA recently shared pictures taken from one of its satellites of these fields in the country side of northern Holland, about 35 kilometers northeast of Amsterdam.
This annual phenomenon draws scores of visitors from around the world to witness the country’s iconic flower-filled fields, particularly in the renowned “bulb region.” Located south of Amsterdam, towns like Lisse, often referred to as “the flower village,” serve as popular destinations for bloom-watchers eager to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature’s canvas.
The Kop van Noord-Holland, however, is the region with some of the largest expanses of tulip fields.
With more than 28,000 hectares dedicated to flower bulbs in 2023, tulips were cultivated the most in the Netherlands, covering over half of the total area. These iconic Dutch flowers thrive in the region’s climate, which features cold nights and winters—a perfect environment for their cultivation.
NASA says the popularity of flower bulb cultivation in the Netherlands has steadily grown over the years, with the area dedicated to growing bulbs expanding by 5,000 hectares between 2013 and 2023.
