Emmerdale and EastEnders both proved soaps are still powerhouses
EastEnders aired a special two-hander episode tonight, while Emmerdale showed a format-breaking half hour of a dinner party. Both episodes were gripping viewing – and proved exactly why soaps are still so loved.
It’s no secret right now that all three big soaps – EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale – are going through a sticky patch. Lack of storyline direction for Corrie has led to much criticism. Meanwhile the doom and gloom of Emmerdale in particular has left fans fed up.
But tonight (Tuesday May 7) although both soap outings centred on particularly hard-hitting storylines, the performances, writing and direction proved exactly what soaps and their cast can do given half a chance.
EastEnders tonight
In EastEnders this evening, Patrick finally found out the truth about Yolande’s sexual assault by Pastor Clayton. The episode featured just the two actors – Angela Wynter and Rudolph Walker – giving us an acting masterclass.
Patrick blamed Yolande at first, he said she had turned a blind eye to Pastor Clayton’s obvious behaviour because she wanted to impress at the church.
Yolande finally found her voice and screamed: “How dare you Patrick, how dare you blame me.” Her impassioned speech about men not having the right to touch her, struck exactly the right note.
The episode ended with the couple sharing a touching moment of love, Yolande agreeing to report Pastor Clayton to the church and unusually, no theme tune over the credits, but instead a picture of Yolande and Patrick in happier times with their song playing.
Emmerdale tonight
Over in Emmerdale, airing at exactly the same time on ITV, we had the dinner party episode. It was split into two halves – the first half the public show, whilst the second what was going on behind closed doors.
The focus of part one was Marlon and Rhona. Once again, Zoe Henry and Mark Charnock showing us exactly what they are capable of given a decent script.
It’s fair to say this current storyline with Gus and baby Ivy has dragged on and not been the most popular. But putting that aside, the gritty reality of their marriage, how the two actors work with each other and bounce off each other is nothing short of brilliant.
The second part was centred around what was going on behind closed doors between Belle and Tom. We’ve known for a while Tom is abusive, but this time we saw just how dark his behaviour has become. He was raging after finding out Belle was still on the pill, despite agreeing to try for a baby and held her hand under a running hot tap.
This is the start of his violent streak and it’s certainly an uncomfortable watch.
Fans react to EastEnders and Emmerdale
Those watching at home have heaped praise on both shows – and quite rightly so.
Speaking of EastEnders one shared: “Tonight’s EastEnders is literally EVERYTHING that television should be!!! and everything brilliant about soap. Phenomenally performed by Angela Wynter and Rudolph Walker, brilliantly written by Lauren Klee, and beautifully directed by Emma Bridgeman-Williams. WOW”
Another agreed: “What a beautiful episode tonight’s EastEnders I am sobbing so hard. Wow. Just wow. Give Angela and Rudolph all the awards.”
“What an absolutely gorgeous episode. I am so glad Clenners brought Yolande back and is invested in her and Patrick. Angela and Rudolph are legends,” agreed one more.
“Bringing back Yolande was genius. Angela Wynter is sublime,” said another.
A fifth added: “Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter (Patrick and Yolande) deserve all the awards for their two- hander performance in this episode. An absolutely stunning acting masterclass, well done.”
Meanwhile, Emmerdale fans were equally as impressed: “Some of the best performances in soap tonight. It’s a difficult one to watch but it’s going to go down in Emmerdale history as iconic,” said one.
“Tonight’s episode is interesting to watch and probably the best one Emmerdale has ever done,” said someone else.
Soaps still top of British TV
The reaction of these viewers – and the episodes themselves – proves exactly why soaps should remain on British television.
Sure, they go through highs and lows – currently we are at a particularly low point. But tonight’s Emmerdale and EastEnders prove that even when the storylines are poor, it’s the characters and the actors’ performances that make soaps great.
They are true powerhouses of drama. Long live the British soap opera.

Rob Rinder has announced on Instagram that his beloved grandmother has died at the age of 96.
The TV star, 45, shared the news on his Instagram on Sunday (May 19) as he paid tribute to his grandmother, Frances.
He shared pictures of Frances, including one of himself and his grandmother together smiling.

The star wrote: “My beloved grandma Frances passed away yesterday at 96. She adored me, her grandchildren & great grandchildren with FIERCE love.”
He added: “What a limitless gift it is to have had her in my life. Hold those who love you truly & unconditionally close. And thank you @jewish_care.”
Many of Rob‘s celebrity friends shared their condolences and support in the comments.
Vanessa Feltz wrote: “Oh Rob I am so sorry to hear your sad news. I wish you and your family long life and send you my deepest condolences dear friend.”
Ruth Langsford said: “So sorry for your loss Rob. How wonderful to have had her, and all that love in your life for so long. Sending love and condolences to you and your family.”
Meanwhile, a fan wrote: “So sorry for your loss, grandparents are so incredibly special.”
Someone else added: “Very sad but what lovely memories you must have, of 96 years of loving you.”
Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour
Rob is currently on our TV screens with his new BBC travel show with Rylan Clark – Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour.
The pair recently gushed over their close friendship as they appeared on The One Show. Rob said: “That beautiful, platonic friendship which I think… a lot of people would be there in the middle of the night in an emergency you know, the emergency services will do that for you and people want to inculcate themselves in your terrible drama, you know, and have a speaking part.
“It’s when you find someone who loves you truly in life that you can telephone when something great happens, and they’ll cheer with you in success. That’s the person.”

Dec Donnelly has reportedly promised to take his godfather duties “seriously” after his best pal Ant McPartlin became a dad.
Ant became a dad on May 14 as he welcomed a son, Wilder, with his wife Anne-Marie. Reports then claimed that Ant has made his best pal Dec Wilder’s godfather.
Now, according to a source, Dec has “promised to take his duties very seriously”.

The insider told OK!: “Dec is obviously so excited for Ant and has already been giving him advice – mainly how to deal with sleepless nights. He can’t wait to take on the role of godfather and he’s promised to take his duties very seriously.”
The source went on: “Wilder will practically be like a nephew to Dec, and he and Ant are excited for their boys to grow up together as there’s less than two years between Wilder and Dec’s son Jack – they want them to become as close as they are.”
Britain’s Got Talent hosts Ant and Dec are also apparently planning a joint summer trip with their families.
The insider added: “Also, Dec’s little girl Isla loves babies and is very pleased there is another baby around. They’re planning lots of playdates and family holidays – they’re all hoping to spend most of the summer in Portugal as they always do and are all excited for Wilder’s first holiday. Dec has also joked that Ant and Anne-Marie won’t need to spend a fortune on clothes as they can have all of Jack’s hand-me-downs!”
Meanwhile, the source said that the baby news will “strengthen their bond” as they’ll be able to “share experiences of having little children”.

It comes days after Ant and Anne-Marie announced the arrival of their son. Ant shared a photo of himself cuddling his newborn as he showed off a family tree tattoo.
He wrote: “Welcome to the family, Wilder Patrick McPartlin. Born, 14/05/24 at 8.54am. Baby is beautiful, Mummy’s a legend, sisters are over the moon. Dad’s a mess!”
Elsewhere, Ant recently addressed his tattoo after some fans thought that his dog Hurley – who he shares with ex-wife Lisa Armstrong – wasn’t included in the family tree.

He has become a firm favourite in his role as a judge on BGT, bringing joy to viewers every weekend – but Bruno Tonioli once opened up on a “relentless” seven-year period which saw many of his family members and friends die in succession.
Bruno, 68, first lost somebody close to him when his mother Fulvia died from a heart attack at the age of 63 in 1994.
Soon after Fulvia’s death, Bruno’s dad Werther developed Alzheimer’s.

Werther wouldn’t pass away until July 2001, but Bruno’s close circle was struck by loss many times before then.
Speaking on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2017, Bruno broke down in tears as he spoke about grief.
He said: “Everybody passed away. Not just my mum – then my grandma, my grandfather, very close friends in London. It was a relentless period where you have knock after knock. It was seven years of nightmare.
“I was lucky to have a group of very close friends to support me.”
Dedicating the Rod Stewart song In My Life to them, Bruno said: “In spite of what has happened in my life, I might have moved away, but they’re still part of me.”
Bruno on Strictly
Speaking about his parents’ reaction to his work in the world of dance Bruno told the Mirror in 2005: “When I became successful as a choreographer, they realised I was earning a living doing what I liked to do. It all turned out fine, but it took a good 10 years. I could tell they were proud of me.
“My father was a keen ballroom dancer, and he would do that with my mother every weekend up until she died. He would have loved Strictly Come Dancing.”
Bruno acted as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing from 2004 until 2019.
Due to his work on Dancing with the Stars in the US, he was replaced by Anton Du Beke in 2020 due to Covid travel restrictions.
He joined the judging panel of Britain’s Got Talent in 2023, replacing David Walliams.
