A lot of Indian-American lawmakers in the U.S. are supporting Operation Sindoor, the military action India took against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. This operation happened after the attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, where 26 Hindu tourists were killed. India responded quickly to protect its people, and U.S. lawmakers have supported India’s right to defend itself.

Support from U.S. Lawmakers

  • Congressman Shri Thanedar, from Michigan, said, “We cannot let terrorism go unanswered. The U.S. must stand with India in these situations.” He stressed that India has the right to protect its people.

  • Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also showed support, saying that while fighting terrorism is important, we also need to be careful not to make things worse between India and Pakistan.

  • Congressman Ro Khanna agreed that India must fight terrorism but also emphasized the need to avoid escalating the conflict. He also called for reforms in Pakistan to address these issues long-term.

Global Support for India

India’s actions have not only been supported by U.S. lawmakers, but also by leaders around the world:

  • Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, said India is right to defend itself and go after terrorist groups. He pointed out that no country should have to put up with attacks from another country.

  • UK MP Priti Patel also backed India’s actions, saying it’s important for India to defend itself against terrorist threats.

  • Officials in France and Israel have acknowledged India’s right to fight terrorism, but they’ve also urged both India and Pakistan to avoid further conflict.

  • In India, Shashi Tharoor, a member of Congress, called the operation a “measured” and “calculated” response to the terrorist threat.

Background on Terrorism and Past Attacks

This isn’t the first time India has had to respond to terrorism from groups in Pakistan. In 2016, 19 soldiers were killed when terrorists attacked an army base in Uri. In 2019, the Pulwama attack killed 40 soldiers, which led India to carry out airstrikes on terrorist camps in Balakot, Pakistan.
