New Delhi, May 7, 2025 – India launched Operation Sindoor in response to a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 civilians. The Indian military targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Among those killed were 10 family members of Masood Azhar, the leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group, including his sister and nephew. Four of his close helpers were also killed.

Why Did India Strike?

The strikes happened after a deadly attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. India said it was a terror attack by groups based in Pakistan and responded by hitting their bases.

What Happened in the Strikes?

India’s military hit 9 key sites used by JeM and LeT, including Bahawalpur, known as a base for JeM, and Muridke, linked to LeT. These strikes lasted just 23 minutes. India said they only hit terrorist targets and avoided civilians.

However, Pakistan said that civilians were also killed in the strikes and called the operation an “act of war.”

Has India Done This Before?

Yes, India has taken similar actions before:

  • In 2016, after 19 soldiers were killed in the Uri attack, India launched surgical strikes across the border.
  • In 2019, India carried out airstrikes in Balakot after the Pulwama attack, which killed 40 soldiers.

What Happens Next?

Tensions are still high, and both India and Pakistan are on alert. Pakistan claimed to have shot down Indian jets in return, but India hasn’t confirmed this. The United Nations and other countries have urged both sides to stay calm.

People are worried about a possible bigger conflict since both countries have nuclear weapons.
