Grayscale, one of the most well-known crypto investment firms, has just updated its list of altcoins that it’s keeping an eye on for possible future investment products.

This new list for Q2 2025 includes 40 cryptocurrencies, showing how fast things can change in the digital asset world. Some coins have been added, while others were removed — including a few surprises.

What’s New (and What’s Gone)

Grayscale updates this list every few months as the crypto market shifts. Back in October 2024, there were 35 coins on the list. That number grew to 39 in January 2025, and now it’s at 40.

But not every coin made the cut this time.

Here are a few notable removals:

  • Kaspa, which had been under the “Currencies” section, is now gone.
  • In the Smart Contract Platforms category, Grayscale removed Sei, Sonic, and Starknet.
  • In Financials, THORChain and Injective Protocol got dropped.
  • The Consumer & Culture section lost Ai16z and Virtuals Protocol.
  • From Utilities & Services, Flock.io, Hyperbolic, and even Worldcoin were removed — possibly due to changes in how useful these projects are seen today.

It’s worth noting that Worldcoin, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has seen lots of controversy over privacy concerns and its eye-scanning tech. That may have played a role in its removal.

What Got Added?

Some interesting new names have joined the list:

  • VeChain (VET) was added to the Smart Contract Platforms group. This project focuses on supply chain solutions and has partnerships with real-world companies like BMW and Walmart China.
  • Plume Network joined the Financials section.
  • Aixbt by Virtuals got added to Consumer & Culture.
  • SYRUP (Maple Finance) and GEOD (Geodnet) were also highlighted for their recent growth.

Some other new names without a category yet include Babylon, Berachain, Monad, Movement, Lombard, Mantra, Eliza, DeepBook, and Walrus. These are early-stage projects that Grayscale may classify later.

A Bit of Background: Why This List Matters

When a coin appears on Grayscale’s “Assets Under Consideration” list, it doesn’t mean they’re creating a product for it right away — but it does mean they’re seriously looking into it. For example:

  • Dogecoin (DOGE) was once just on this list. In January 2025, Grayscale launched the Grayscale Dogecoin Trust.
  • Just a few weeks later, in February, they released a trust for Pyth Network (PYTH) — another coin that started out on this same list.

So yeah — being on the list can be a big deal.

What’s Grayscale’s Plan?

Grayscale says they’ll keep updating this list every quarter and sometimes even within the quarter, especially as they launch new single-asset funds or rebalance multi-asset ones.

Their team is clearly working hard to keep up with the fast-moving world of crypto, and these updates give us a peek at what could be next for investors.

TL;DR

  • Grayscale’s Q2 2025 list now features 40 altcoins (up from 39 in January).
  • Coins like Kaspa, Sei, Starknet, and Worldcoin have been removed.
  • New names like VeChain, Plume Network, and Aixbt have been added.
  • Past coins like DOGE and PYTH moved from this list to actual Grayscale products.
  • The list is a key signal of what Grayscale might back next.
