What Happens To India’s WTC Final Hopes If 2nd Test vs Bangladesh Is Washed Out
Rain and a wet outfield have played spoilsport in the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park Stadium, with the weather threatening to derail India’s quest for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Only 35 overs were bowled on Day 1 as Bangladesh struggled to 107/3, with Indian pacer Akash Deep impressing by picking up two crucial wickets. The second day was washed out without a ball being bowled.
As it stands, India lead the WTC standings with a percentage points (PCT) tally of 71.67 after 10 matches, putting them in a prime position to make their third consecutive final. A 2-0 series win over Bangladesh would have left India needing only three more wins from their remaining eight matches to secure a spot in the WTC final.
However, with rain looming large over the second Test, a draw could complicate India’s path to the final.
Should this Test ended in a draw, India will need to win five of their next eight Test matches to cement their place in the WTC final, assuming other contenders for a top-two finish do not drop points.
This leave India with a more challenging route, as they will likely need to clean sweep New Zealand 3-0 at home and secure at least two wins in the five-match Border-Gavaskar series against Australia in Down Under.
India have won the last two series in Australia, but repeating that feat will be a daunting task, especially with the pressure of WTC qualification hanging over their heads. The team’s dominant record at home, combined with their recent successes Down Under, gives India some confidence, but the margin for error has narrowed considerably if this match is washed out.
The series against New Zealand at home will be pivotal in shaping India’s campaign. While the Indian side has been virtually unbeatable on home soil, a 3-0 sweep against the Kiwis is crucial to lessen the burden of needing to win several games away in Australia.
Given India’s history in Australia, two wins in the Border-Gavaskar series would still be an impressive result, but the challenge is immense.
For now, the Indian camp will be hoping for a break in the rain to allow play to resume in Kanpur. Every session lost to the weather could mean India face a more uphill battle in their journey to the WTC final. With a host of talented bowlers, including Akash Deep, already making an impact in this match, India will look to capitalise on any opportunity to take control of the game once the weather clears.
The stakes are high, and India’s immediate focus remains on Bangladesh. However, the shadow of WTC qualification looms large, and the rain-soaked outfield at Green Park Stadium is adding an unwanted layer of complexity to India’s otherwise well-laid plans.

Pakistan Star, Who ‘Has Better Record Than Virat Kohli’, Slams Test Ton Against England
Abdullah Shafique in action© AFP
Pakistan cricket team batter Abdullah Shafique returned to form with a brilliant century on Day 1 of the first Test match against England in Multan on Monday. Shafique looked in tremendous touch as he slammed 102 off 184 deliveries before getting dismissed by Gus Atkinson. It was a significant knock for the Pakistan cricketer who scored three ducks in the last three matches. Even Pakistan skipper Shan Masood was asked about Shafique’s form but he defended his teammate with a reference to India batter Virat Kohli. Masood pointed out that after 19 Tests, Shafique’s record was actually better than Kohli.
“With all due respect, I don’t think your question is accurate…I agree that Pakistan hasn’t played good cricket in 2024. Things should be looked at objectively. You talk about stats. The other day I was reading a stat that Abdullah Shafique, who has played 19 Tests, has a better record than Virat Kohli,” he said.
Shan Masood and opener Abdullah Shafique both cracked centuries as Pakistan scored an impressive 328-4 on the opening day of the first Test against England in Multan on Monday.
Masood’s brilliant 151 was his first hundred for four years, while Shafique also returned to form with 102 as the pair put on a solid 253-run stand for the second wicket after Pakistan won the toss and batted.
England, led by Ollie Pope in the absence of the injured Ben Stokes, briefly fought back when they removed both Masood and Shafique in the space of just two runs in the third session.
The visitors then took the second new ball at 308-3 and dismissed Babar Azam, trapped leg-before by fast bowler Chris Woakes for 30. Saud Shakeel was unbeaten on 35 at the close of play, with nightwatchman Naseem Shah yet to score.

“Why My Name Isn’t There?”: Varun Chakravarthy On 3-Year-Long Team India Absence
Gwalior:
Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy says he is reaping the rewards of putting over-spin on the ball instead of side-spin following his successful India comeback. The 33-year-old, whose India career came to an abrupt halt after an underwhelming debut in the 2021 T20 World Cup, took three wickets against Bangladesh in the series opener. As the great Nathan Lyon has shown over the years, putting over-spin on the ball generates sharp bounce and turn, which aided Varun on Sunday night. His googly to get rid of Jaker Ali showed the former architect’s total control over his craft.
“I used to be a side-spin bowler, but right now, I have completely shifted to being an over-spin bowler,” said Varun after playing a part in India’s seven-wicket win.
“It’s a minute technical aspect of spin bowling, but it took me more than two years. I gradually tested it in TNPL and IPL. While the mental aspect also had to be worked on, the major chunk of effort I put in was on my technical side.” Despite doing well in the IPL and domestic cricket over the past two seasons, Varun did not get a recall to the Indian team and that only made him hungrier. Now that he is back in blues, it feels like a rebirth.
“Whenever there was a squad that was announced, I used to feel like, ‘Why is my name not there?’ and I used to keep thinking about that. So that kind of brought the motivation within me that I should not leave this.
“I should go all out and make a comeback, so I started playing a lot of domestic games and giving importance to it. That kind of helped me,” said the soft-spoken cricketer.
A catch was dropped in Varun’s first over that eventually went for 15 runs with Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hasan Shanto and Towhid Hridoy going on the offensive against spinner in the powerplay.
However, skipper Suryakumar Yadav trusted Varun to bounce back in the following over and he did that by having Hridoy caught at long-on.
“Yes, in the first over the catch could have gone my way but that’s how T20s are played. I felt the reverse-sweep six was a good ball but it still went for a six, so it’s all mixed emotions.” He played the series opener of leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi who too has had done well fairly well in the limited opportunities that he has got after the T20 Word Cup, reflecting India’s robust bench strength. Varun acknowledged the fierce competition.
“There is good competition and there is good camaraderie also. And the person who was cheering me was Ravi Bishnoi; he was coming and telling me messages, so I can’t ask for more.
“It’s actually good to have such competition so that people will keep pushing each other. Someone will be better than others at one point of time and he will definitely get the Cup for India, so that competition is very required,” Varun added.

“Rs 5 Crore, Flat In Pune”: Paris Olympics 2024 Medalist’s Father Makes Staggering Demand
The father of Paris Olympics shooting bronze medallist Swapnil Kusale on Monday expressed disappointment over the Maharashtra government paying a prize money of Rs 2 crore to his son, saying Haryana doles out much higher amount for its athletes. Swapnil Kusale, who hails from Kolhapur, won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in 50m rifle 3 positions event in August. The 29-year-old’s father, Suresh Kusale, said his son should get Rs 5 crore prize money and a flat near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune, and maintained the Haryana government gives much higher amounts for its Olympics medal winning athletes.
Speaking to reporters in Kolhapur, Suresh Kusale claimed “The Haryana government gives Rs 5 crore to its each (Olympics medal winning) player (Haryana gives Rs 6 crore to a gold medallist, Rs 4 crore to silver medallist, Rs 2.5 crore to bronze winner).
“As per a new policy announced by the Maharashtra government, an Olympic bronze medal winner will get Rs 2 crore. Why does the state form such criteria when Swapnil was only the second individual Olympic medal winner from Maharashtra (after wrestler K D Jadhav in 1952) in 72 years?” Five individuals won medals in the Paris Olympics for India of which four were from Haryana and one, Swapnil Kusale, from Maharashtra. Haryana is a much smaller state compared to Maharashtra, but it gives higher prize money to its medal winning athletes, he said.
“However, our government has announced Rs 5 crore for a gold medal winner, Rs 3 crore for a silver medallist and Rs 2 crore for a bronze medallist. Why have such a criteria when only two players from Maharashtra have won individual Olympic medals in so many years,” Suresh Kusale asked.
“Had I known such an outcome, I would have persuaded him to explore a career in some other sports. Is the amount kept low because Swapnil is from a humble background? Would the reward amount have remained the same if he had been the son of an MLA or a minister?” he wondered.
Suresh Kusale said the 50-meter-three-position rifle shooting arena in the sports complex should be named after his son.
“Swapnil should get Rs 5 crore as an award, a flat near Balewadi Sports Stadium so that he could easily commute for practice. Swapnil’s name should be given to the 50-meter-three-position rifle shooting arena,” he said when asked about his demands.
After his Paris feat, the ace marksman was promoted by his employer Central Railway and appointed an officer on special duty.
The Maharashtra government recently announced doubling the prize money to players winning medals at major sports events, including Olympics, World Championships and Asian Games, among others.
