Race Across the World star Jeff Brazier and his heartbreaking upbringing
Jeff Brazier is currently starring in Celebrity Race Across the World on BBC One alongside his youngest son Freddie.
The 45-year-old TV personality first popped up on screens in 2003 when he appeared on Channel 4’s Shipwrecked.
Since then, chirpy Jeff has appeared on the likes of I’m A Celebrity, Dancing On Ice and Celebrity SAS.
However, it is perhaps for his relationship with the late Jade Goody – with them regularly appearing in the tabloids in the noughties – that Jeff is best known. He’s also a dad to two sons – EastEnders and Strictly star Bobby, as well as Freddie – from that relationship.
But how much do you know about Jeff’s life before he was famous?
Jeff Brazier ‘abandoned’ in foster care
Back in November 2020, it was reported Jeff was undergoing therapy, stemming from issues when he was put into foster care.
Jeff was fostered aged five, as his teenage mum reportedly struggled to raise him on her own.
His biological dad was said to be not on the scene – and died when Jeff was only 10.
And so, Jeff and his brother Spencer reportedly lived at a women’s refuge in Great Yarmouth before going into care.
Jeff previously noted during an appearance on Dave Berry’s Dadpod podcast how he hoped to be the ‘best version of himself’ for his own boys, having suffered from feeling of abandonment.
“I’ve been in psychotherapy for a process called re-parenting,” Jeff explained at the time.
He went on: “[It’s] to do with the childhood rejection and abandonment, you know, of being in foster care for however long I was in there.
“The last two and a half years have been absolutely vital for me becoming the best version of myself, if you like, the version of myself that I may have been if the circumstances were different when I was younger.”
Dad’s death in Marchioness disaster
In a desperately sad turn of events, Jeff’s father passed away in the 1989 Marchioness disaster.
He was the skipper of the boat which sank in the Thames in London after being hit by a dredger. Over 50 people were killed, including Jeff’s dad Stephen Faldo.
Back in June 2020, Jeff posted about his father “that fate was cruel enough to ensure I’d never meet”.
He opened up to fans, admitting he’d looked into the events that led to Stephen’s death for the first time.
Offering inspirational words, Jeff wrote: “I hope others who have lived lives equally as complicated as my own will feel even just a slight sense of satisfaction knowing you’re not on your own, your feelings are valid, and being honest, even if slightly vague feels great and is to be encouraged.
“Own your story, recognise the strengths you’ve acquired and show your vulnerabilities because we all need to be a little more human and recovery works (much) better when we aren’t bottling things up. Yes I’m encouraging you to talk, get used to it.”
Brother’s life-long disability
In 2010, a BBC Three programme focused on Jeff’s relationship with Spencer, who has cerebral palsy.
Spencer moved in with his sibling for the show. Jeff hoped it would assist his brother, helping him live a more active life.
Jeff said at the time: “Through embarking on this journey with Spencer I hope to provide the catalyst that will enable him to find himself, his courage and his confidence, break down the psychological restrictions he places on himself and for us to grow close once more after our 15 years of living with some distance between us.”
Some critics at the time, however, pondered whether Jeff was pushing his brother too much. And Jeff, too, reportedly admitted to demanding too much of Spencer.
He added: “I’m not critical of Mum’s parenting,’ says Jeff. ‘I know that when it takes him hours to tidy or wash up, it’s easier just to step in and do it yourself. But over time, it’s taken Spencer’s independence.”
Celebrity Race Across the World is on BBC One tonight, Wednesday August 28, at 9pm.

Kelly Brook on recurring row she has with husband Jeremy weekly
Star of Celebrity Race Across The World Kelly Brook previously revealed the row she and her husband have every week.
The British TV star formed a relationship with her model husband Jeremy Parisi in 2015. In July 2022, the pair tied the knot with a ceremony in Italy.
Kelly Brook and husband Jeremy argue about the same thing
However, while talking to The Guardian last summer, Kelly opened up about the “Sunday arguments” she and Jeremy have.
“Jeremy is an energy saver, so he’ll always put the 15-minute wash on,” Kelly revealed. “I argue that’s not long enough to wash anything and examine every T-shirt for the remnants of a stain. We have that debate at least once a week.”
Kelly shared that the rest of her Sundays usually consist of driving down to Kent to visit family and eat dinner with her mum, brother, sister, nieces and nephews.
Due to Jeremy’s family living in Paris, they occasionally try to visit on the train when they can.
“Sundays are spent pottering, doing housey things, having barbecues, blowing up inflatables for the pool,” Kelly continued.
Kelly didn’t realise how ‘competitive’ Jeremy was
Before taking part in Celebrity Race Across The World with her husband Jeremy, Kelly admitted to Closer that she was unaware how seriously her man would take the race.
“I didn’t realise how competitive he was, like, crazy competitive. I’m much more about the experience. I think I got on his nerves because he was full steam ahead,” she said.
“If Jeremy was doing the race alone, he’d have finished it in a week. I was kind of slowing him down a little bit and I was like, let’s have a Brazilian barbecue one day or let’s go to the beach.”
Celebrity Race Across the World is on Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One. It’s repeated Sunday afternoons on BBC Two.

Celebrity Race Across The World star Kelly Brook on ‘wake-up call’ after punching two of her exes
Celebrity Race Across The World star Kelly Brook previously opened up about hitting her ex-boyfriends, admitting it’s “something she needs to work on”.
The TV star, 44, has had a slew of relationships over the years. From Hollywood heartthrobs to sports stars, Kelly’s love life has not always been a walk in the park.
Kelly has since found love with husband Jeremy Parisi – with the pair back on screen today (September 15) for Celebrity Race Across the World.
However, in 2014, Kelly made headlines when she confessed to assaulting two of her ex-partners.
Race Across The World star Kelly Brook admits assaulting boyfriends
In 2014, Kelly released her autobiography, Kelly Brook: Close Up. In the bombshell book, Kelly revealed that she had punched two of her former partners, Jason Statham and Danny Cipriani, in separate incidents.
According to Kelly, she punched Jason Statham at Madonna’s wedding to Guy Ritchie in 2000, for reportedly flirting with Gwyneth Paltrow.
And the model also admitted she assaulted Strictly star Danny Cipriani after she allegedly caught him cheating.
Kelly Brook admitted she’s ‘not an angel’
Kelly spoke about punching her exes while speaking on ITV’s This Morning in 2014. Despite the severity of her actions, the actress claimed it was down to her “fiery” personality.
“It’s true, I did both of these things,” she said. “I’m not saying I’m an angel or that the things I’ve done are right, I’m not saying that’s the right thing to do at all. But I guess I get some of that fiery passion from my parents.”
She added: “I’m not going to make a habit of doing that in the future. I’m just going to pick more wisely with the men I be with.”
‘It’s a wake-up call’
While in her 2014 autobiography, Kelly discussed her previous assaults, admitting it was “something she needs to work on”.
“I think if you come from a background where you’re disrespected that’s how you retaliate, it’s natural,” she shared, as MailOnline reports.
“It’s obviously something I need to work on because I don’t want to go around punching people.”
Kelly added: “I have a real tolerance threshold, but sometimes these boys just push your buttons and it’s a wake-up call: ‘This cannot continue.’”
Watch Kelly on Celebrity Race Across The World on Sunday (September 15) at 5:30pm on BBC Two.

Michael Douglas on ‘bump’ that caused Catherine Zeta-Jones split
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are a beloved Hollywood couple – but the pair once shocked the world by splitting for a brief while.
Welsh star Catherine and actor Michael first met back in 1998 and quickly hit it off. Fast forward to now, and the couple are still loved-up and proud parents to son Dylan, 24, and daughter Carys, 21.
However, like most couples, their romance previously hit a bump in the road, with the pair briefly splitting. Something Michael later said was a “difficult time”.

Catherine – who is starring in the movie Dad’s Army today (September 15) – and Michael tied the knot in November 2000 during a stunning ceremony at the New York Plaza Hotel.
And after almost 24 years of marriage and 26 years as a couple, the Hollywood pair are still together. But between 2013 and 2014, the couple split for a little while.
In August 2013, Catherine and Michael announced they were taking a break from being together. In a statement, they said they wanted some time to “evaluate and work on their marriage”.

However, in September, Michael shared an update with People about his relationship status. He said: “We’re working things out, talking and we’ll see how she goes.”
And by the end of April 2014, Catherine and Michael had seemingly gotten back together, with the pair attending several events together.
A year after they reconciled, Michael opened up about the couple’s split during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“It can’t be a one-way street. But I’m crazy about her. And yeah, I think every couple has their difficult times,” he said at the time.
“The only problem is, as you well know, we’re all in the public eye, and it tends to get a little more exposed than most,” Michael added. He then declared: “We’re back stronger than ever.”
Michael on why he and Catherine Zeta-Jones split
Michael also addressed his and Catherine’s split, talking to Event magazine in 2015. He admitted: “We had a little bump in the road.”
Michael went on: “The problem in this business is that everything is so public.
“I love Catherine as much, more than I ever have. And hopefully the feeling’s mutual. We worked things out – if both people want to work something out and make it better, you can do it,” he said. “You can’t do it if it’s just one person.”
Watch Catherine on Dad’s Army on Sunday (September 15) at 4:30pm on ITV1.
