Coronation Street’s Emrhys Cooper reveals his real-life experience of cults

Published

on

Emrhys Cooper has arrived in Coronation Street, playing sinister cult leader Rowan Cunliffe. He’s wowing Leanne and making his presence felt already.

He may seem charming now, but it’s not long until Toyah starts to be suspicious about what his real motives are. Will Leanne be drawn into a creepy cult?

Actor Emrhys Cooper has taken on the role of Rowan, and in a strange coincidence, he’s got personal experience of cults after a difficult experience with his parents.

We sat down for a chat with Emrhys to find out all about drawing on his own life for the role, and what made him swap the bright lights of Hollywood for Weatherfield!

Dancing Christmas tree!

Emrhys started his career as a dancer, but he was ambitious! After dancing in the West End and even performing as a dancing Christmas tree in the Corrie panto, he decided to head to Los Angeles.

He appeared in shows including CSI New York, Person of Interest,  Desperate Housewives, Mamma Mia, and Vanity. He’s written and directed two films, including The Shuroo Process which is based on his own experiences and is all about someone who joins a cult!

And now he’s come to Coronation Street.

Coming home

Weatherfield is quite a change from LA but Emrhys says he wanted to come home and this was the perfect excuse.

“I’m loving it,” he says. “I’ve actually been yearning to come back for a few years now, but I didn’t want to come back without a job. The job and the role are a dream come true for me and I’m embracing the change with open arms.”

And as a lifelong fan of Corrie, he says he’s “having the best time”!

He says: “I always looked up to Jane Danson (who plays Leanne) and I’ve been a fan of her work and I love sharing a screen with an icon!”

But the audition proved a bit of a challenge.

“I actually filmed the audition when I was sick as a dog with the flu but I gave it my all. Offered the role on 20 December. It was the best Christmas present ever!”

Art imitating real life

He says he couldn’t believe the coincidences between his real life and the part of Rowan.

“I was immediately struck by how well I knew the character,” he tells us. “Some roles just fit like a glove. I’m really grateful that Coronation Street saw that in me. I have all that knowledge but they didn’t know that. It was a wonderful surprise.”

So what was Emrhys’s real-life experience that made him so keen to take on the role of Rowan?

He says that he grew up in Totnes, Devon, which is a very new-age town with, as Emrhys says, “lots of gurus and holistic doctors”.

“My parents encountered a few Rowan types over the years,” he explains. “I didn’t really understand it growing up but as I got older and witnessed it first-hand, I understood some of the dangers of these type of characters. My mother’s health was severely affected by some very dangerous advice she received, which is still very upsetting to me.”

Leanne in danger?

But is Leanne in danger as she gets more involved? Who is the mysterious Rowan?

“Rowan is charming, not slimy, he’s relatable and down to earth,” Emrhys tells us. “His main role is recruitment. He travels all over to present conferences and seminars identifying the more receptive people and encouraging them into the fold.”

But he adds: “What we’ve seen so far is only the tip of the iceberg. Rowan is very clever and very good at what he does. He can see the people who are susceptible because they’ve been through trauma – he can see that Leanne is packing a lot! He knows the buttons to press. He’s not fazed by Toyah’s reaction to him, and there will be other characters who find themselves in his thrall and may find themselves in the Institute!”

Martin Clunes has made a name for himself on TV thanks to variety of shows – but away from the screens, he enjoys a rather private home life with his famous wife.

Tonight sees Martin back on our TV screens for his ITV show, Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific. It sees the actor explore the region, beginning with Papua New Guinea, before moving west across the Pacific to the Trobriand Islands.

But away from his career, what is Martin’s private life like including his relationships? Let’s take a look…

The Doc Martin star is married to his wife, TV producer Philippa Braithwaite. The couple married in 1997 and have one child together.

I call her ‘The Boss’, but, actually, it’s a very equal partnership.

Philippa is a known TV producer and has worked with Martin on a string of shows, including Doc Martin and ITV drama Manhunt.

In 2022, Martin opened up about his marriage and shared the secret to their long romance. He told SAGA: “At the end of the day, I suppose, everybody should marry my wife. But too late, I already did. And I’m not letting her go.

“I can’t totally analyse why it works, although I suppose some things are obvious; we make each other laugh, for example, and I know I have to make my wife laugh to keep her because her dad was very funny, too, and she’s funny and so is our daughter, Emily.”

He added at the time: “It helps that we’ve always worked together, from the very beginning when we met, and we’re partners in our company, Buffalo, and yet we do totally different things. I call her ‘The Boss’, but, actually, it’s a very equal partnership. She’ll be in her office and I’ll be on set or in the studio and then, at some point in the day, she’ll turn up and, hand on heart, I still feel totally thrilled to see her, like it’s the first time. It never stops.”

Martin and Philippa welcomed their daughter, Emily, in 1999.

Before his marriage with Philippa, Martin was married to Lucy Aston. They tied the knot in 1990, but divorced in 1997.

According to reports, Martin once called the marriage “rotten” . In 1997, Lucy reportedly told the Mirror of their relationship: “He told me I was boring and different and I just thought: ‘No more.’ I stood up and said ‘thanks for dinner – this is the end’ and stormed out. I sat in the car shaking with rage.

“Later I went back and Martin was sitting there, surrounded by takeaway cartons filled with our meal. He just looked at me. I took off my gold wedding ring, slammed it on the table and walked out. We both knew it was over.”

Strictly cheating scandal and marriage split

Published

A special episode of DIY SOS starring Strictly Come Dancing fave Katya Jones will no doubt have viewers reaching for their phones to look up – or remind themselves – about Katya’s personal life away from the cameras.

As while the likes of Anton Du Beke, Luba Mushtuk, Graziano Di Prima, and Nancy Xu will also be on hand for the build of dance facilities for a performing arts school in North Tyneside, it is Katya who has previously been caught up in show drama… particularly when it comes to the Strictly curse!

Here’s what you need to know about the popular star Katya Jones and her love life…

Katya Jones relationships: Strictly scandal

Back in 2018, Katya had been part of Strictly for two years. In that time she partnered with former Labour MP Ed Balls, and then actor Joe McFadden, with whom she won the 2017.

But for Strictly’s 16th run, Katya danced with stand up Seann Walsh – and they created more headlines than her Glitterball-winning run the year before.

At the time he was in a relationship with actress Rebecca Humphries, and Katya was married to Strictly co-star Neil Jones. However, they were photographed kissing in the street in London.

The fallout saw Katya and Seann make apologies on It Takes Two, with Seann branded a ‘love rat’ in tabloid reports.

At the time, Katya also wrote 0n Twitter: “I’m so sorry about any offence or hurt I may have caused with my actions. I wasn’t thinking and it was a one-off mistake after some drinks.

I love my husband and we are very happy together.

“I love my husband and we are very happy together. This is not a reflection on our relationship.”

Marriage split from husband Neil Jones

Ultimately, despite Katya’s words on It Takes Two, she and Neil did ultimately split up less than a year later. They had married in August 2013 after dating for several years.

Reflecting on the kiss between his wife and Seann, Neil later admitted: “It was a shock. For me it was a major shock.

“And I appreciate that Katya told me, so I found out from Katya before I saw it in the news.”

Furthermore, Katya indicated she had ‘no regrets’ – and Neil suggested the kiss with Seann was not responsible for the end of their marriage.

Neil said: “We found that we’d grown apart like people do, so we were like: ‘Okay, let’s go our separate ways.’ We are lucky that we don’t have kids.

“It had nothing to do with what happened [with Seann]. We were moving in different directions but we are friends again now. Katya is a great girl and I’ve got nothing bad to say about her.”

Katya Jones partner

Away from the cameras, Katya has shared insight into her love life after marriage.

Back in late 2022, she told incredulous fans: “Nobody wants to date me.”

That appeared to have changed when Katya was linked in the tabloids to property developer William Abbotts.

However, by October of last year, an insider told The Sun that Katya was single again.

The source was said to have said: “The union ran its course.”
