NASA’s Artemis Program will not just land astronauts on the Moon, it will change the face of the Earth’s nearest neighbour. There is a space station being built which is to be installed in the lunar orbit, to help astronauts fully colonise the Moon. This space station is called the Gateway and its development is underway in full force by NASA and its collaborators.
In its report, the American space agency says that the Gateway’s foundational modules – the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) and the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) – are being built by Maxar Technologies and Northrop Grumman, respectively. These two modules will soon be launched by SpaceX. The PPE is a 60-kilowatt solar electric propulsion spacecraft and the HALO is the is the pressurized living quarters where astronauts who visit the Gateway, often on their way to the Moon, will work.
Back in 2021, NASA announced that it has selected SpaceX for the transportation of the two modules at a cost of $331.8 million. The launch was targeted no earlier than May 2024, but it now seems to have been pushed to late 2024 if not early 2025.
Once the two modules are launched, four astronauts of the Artemis IV mission will fly with the International Habitation module (I-Hab), and be the first to actually live and conduct experiments there. Notably, Artemis III will be the first mission where two astronauts touchdown on the lunar surface. It was initially targeted for launch in 2025, but has been delayed to 2026 due to developmental issues.

Why is Gateway necessary?
The Gateway will facilitate science in the lunar orbit in order to establish a full-fledged sustainable lunar base. “Astronauts will be able to live, work, and prepare for lunar surface missions, and develop instruments for science investigations to study heliophysics, human health, and life sciences, among other areas,” says NASA.
It will also have docking ports, similar to the International Space Station (ISS) around Earth, to host visiting spaceships. NASA says that the Gateway will be installed in a lunar orbit so it passes over both the North and South Pole areas of the Moon, which it says is better for science opportunities and getting access to the lunar surface.

The Artemis IV mission, which will carry the I-Hab will also include SpaceX’s Starship. According to the plan, Starship will be docked to the Gateway and be used to land two astronauts on the Moon.
The ultimate purpose of the Gateway is to help NASA and its partners prepare for the next destination – Mars. As NASA Administrator Bill Nelson once said, the Moon will act as a test bed for missions to the red planet.
“With Artemis, NASA will land the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut on the lunar surface and establish long-term exploration for scientific discovery and to prepare for human missions to Mars,” the agency said in a statement.
