Bihar Politics LIVE Updates: It will be the second volte-face by Kumar in less than 18 months, when he had dumped the BJP, accusing it of having tried to engineer a split in the JD(U), and joined hands with the RJD-Congress combine, with which he had severed his ties in 2017
Bihar News LIVE Updates: With Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s return to the BJP-led NDA imminent, sources privy to the development said that the Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) president was likely to resign on Sunday and a new state government, with the support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), would be sworn in by evening today. “Tomorrow at 9 am there will be a meeting of BJP MLAs and MPs again. At 10 am, JD(U)’s MPs and legislators will have a meeting at CM’s residence. Following this, all BJP MLAs will come to the CM’s residence and extend their support to Nitish Kumar. After a joint NDA meeting, Nitish will be chosen as the leader of the NDA legislators,” sources said.
After this, Nitish Kumar is likely to head to Raj Bhawan, tender his resignation and stake claim to form a new government. The formation of a new government, with the BJP’s support, is “expected by the evening”. “The Bihar CM has sought time to meet the Governor in the first half of the day. Offices, including the Governor’s secretariat, have also been ordered to remain open on Sunday in view of the likelihood of hectic activities”, said the source who claimed that Kumar, who has maintained a deafening silence over the political turmoil in the state, had “confided in trusted aides about his next move “a couple of days ago”.
History Of Nitish Kumar Switching Sides
Kumar’s exit from Mahagathbandhan, which he had joined less than 18 months ago, would deal a body blow to the opposition bloc INDIA. He had joined hands with RJD, founded by his former arch-rival Lalu Prasad, in August 2022 after he severed ties with the BJP which he accused of having tried to engineer a split in the JD(U).
The longest-serving CM of Bihar, thereafter, embarked upon a drive to bring together all parties, across the country, to take on the BJP that culminated in the formation of the opposition bloc INDIA. Over the past two decades, Kumar has frequently switched alliances between the BJP and the RJD-Congress-Left coalition while retaining his position in office.

PM Modi Hits Out At Rahul Gandhi Over Caste Message In US: ‘Insulted Tribals, OBCs…’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing rally in Kurukshetra.
While addressing a poll-bound rally in Haryana’s Kurukshetra, PM Modi claimed that Jawahar Lal Nehru had said that the quality of government services would deteriorate if reservations are given to people in jobs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent remarks on caste and India’s quota system at an event in the US, and said that the Gandhi family has always opposed reservations and insulted OBCs, Dalits and Tribals.
While addressing a poll-bound rally in Haryana’s Kurukshetra, PM Modi claimed that country’s first prime minister and Rahul’s great-grandfather Jawahar Lal Nehru had said that the quality of government services would deteriorate if reservations are given to people in jobs.
Modi further said that Nehru also wrote a letter to the chief ministers of states opposing reservations.
“This (Gandhi) family has always insulted OBCs, Dalits and Tribals. When Nehru ji was the Prime Minister, he opposed reservation. He wrote a letter to the CMs of the states, proof of which is available. Not only this, Nehru ji had also said that if people with reservations get jobs, the quality of government services will deteriorate. When Indira Gandhi came, she also put a stay on the OBC reservation… Rajiv Gandhi also opposed reservation. In an interview, he even called those who got reservation as ‘Buddhu’…” he said while addressing the gathering.

Further attacking previous Congress governments in Haryana, PM Modi said, “We have seen that period of the Congress government when money for development used to be limited to one district only.” The BJP undertook development work in an equitable manner, Modi said.
He said that the Congress’ politics has reduced to spreading falsehood and anarchy in country. Today’s Congress has become a new form of urban Naxal and they do not feel any shame in speaking lies, he said.
Rahul Gandhi’s take on reservations
The Prime Minister’s remarks came after Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) earlier this week, said the Congress party would think of scrapping reservations when India becomes a “fair place”, adding that India was not a fair place at the moment.
While speaking to students at Georgetown University during his US trip, Gandhi reiterated his demand for a caste census and had said the Congress party wanted to know the socio-economic position of lower castes in India.
“The caste census is now an unstoppable idea. The critical question of whether 90% of our population is meaningfully represented in India’s institutional structure – economy, government, education – demands an answer. At its core, this is an issue of fairness and justice. Anything less than a comprehensive caste census, along with an economic and institutional survey is unacceptable.” “That’s the problem. Now, it (reservation) is not the only tool. There are other tools,” he had said.
His take on reservations, however, stirred trouble and drew flak from different corners of the political spectrum. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati alleged that Congress itself had done nothing for lower castes despite being in power for decades, and the BJP said the Congress leader’s comments came out of frustration.
Rahul Gandhi’s clarification on quota comments
In another interaction a day later, the Congress leader clarified that he was misquoted by some people that he was against reservation. “Let me make it clear – I am not against reservation. We will take reservation beyond the limit of 50 per cent,” he said.
“We feel there’s a very deep problem of participation, and we are going to address that problem. I don’t see it as a mandal vs kamandal issue. What we are saying is different than the idea of only reservations. What we are saying is we want a comprehensive understanding first of what’s going on and then we are going to apply a series of policies to correct it, reservation being one of them,” Gandhi added.
Polling for the 90-member legislative Haryana assembly will be held on October 5 and the votes will be counted on October 8.

Yadav, the Barkatha legislator, and Verma were given membership of the party by Jharkhand BJP president Babulal Marandi at a programme in its headquarters in Ranchi
Independent MLA Amit Kumar Yadav and former legislator Jai Prakash Verma on Saturday rejoined the BJP ahead of the Jharkhand assembly polls.
Yadav, the Barkatha legislator, and Verma were given membership of the party by Jharkhand BJP president Babulal Marandi at a programme in its headquarters here.
BJP’s Jharkhand in-charge Laxmikant Bajpai was present at the programme.
Yadav, the 42-year-old politician, won the Barkatha assembly seat in the 2019 assembly polls by defeating BJP’s Janki Prasad Yadav by a margin of 24,812 votes.
He represented the Barkatha constituency from 2009 to 2014 on a BJP ticket but he lost the seat in the 2014 assembly polls.
“When I was denied a ticket from the party in 2019, I decided to contest the polls as an Independent candidate. I got offers from various parties but I did not join any party. I continued to work for the BJP despite being an Independent MLA. Today, I formally rejoined the party,” Yadav said.
Verma was in the BJP and had won the Gandey assembly seat in 2014 on a party ticket. But, he lost the seat in 2019 polls to JMM’s Sarfraz Ahmad.
He later switched to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The INDIA bloc allegedly denied him a ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from the Koderma seat.
He, then, contested the Koderma seat as an Independent candidate, which led to his expulsion from the JMM.
“I returned to my original party after 18 months. The past 18 months were a black chapter of my life. I will work to strengthen the party in Jharkhand,” he said.
Marandi said that their return to the BJP would strengthen the organisation.
“People are joining the party as they found that no work has been done in the state in the past five years under the JMM-led alliance government. The corruption reached its peak, the law and order deteriorated and the current government failed to fulfil its promises. The people of the state have decided to uproot the government in the upcoming elections,” he added.

HD Kumaraswamy Accuses Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Of Illegally Building House On Land Of Dalit

Siddaramaiah had served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2005 while he was a member of the J.anata Dal and Janata Dal (Secular) respectively
Union Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday accused Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of building a house illegally on a site allotted to a Dalit with a disability during his tenure as the deputy chief minister.
He said the allegations against the CM regarding illegalities in the allotment of 14 sites to his wife in a layout by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), in connection with which the Governor has given approval for investigation against him, were not the only ones committed by Siddaramaiah in Mysuru.
“….haven’t we now seen what he has done for the farmers? Are we not seeing (developments) in Mysuru (referring to MUDA site allotment scam)? Let these15 sites (14 actually) be there on one side. As the Deputy CM, he had built a house. On whose land did you build the house. Do you want records of it? I’m asking the chief minister,” Kumaraswamy said.
Speaking to reporters here, he said, “Who built the house illegally on a MUDA site allotted to a Dalit? Taking 15 sites is not the only thing against you (Siddaramaiah), you have a series of things in Mysuru. A Dalit, who is handicapped, had paid Rs 24,000 to MUDA and the site was allotted to him, but in that place, by creating false documents in the name of Sakamma, you took 10,000 sq ft from Sakamma and constructed the house.”
“When that Dalit came and saw on his site someone had constructed a house. People might have forgotten the developments that took place then, but Kumaraswamy still has the documents. He (Siddaramaiah) repeatedly says that his (life) is an open book. Open it and say whom was the site sold later? Who still possesses it? Just for name sake, a sale was shown. If that (issue) is brought out, another ‘Ramayana’ will start,” the Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries added.
Siddaramaiah had served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2005 while he was a member of the Janata Dal and Janata Dal (Secular) respectively, but Kumaraswamy did not specify as to when this happened.
