James Anderson Backs Jofra Archer As Key Weapon For England In 2025/26 Ashes

Published

James Anderson, England’s legendary pacer and current bowling mentor, has voiced strong support for Jofra Archer, suggesting that the speedster could play a pivotal role in England’s quest to reclaim the Ashes in Australia in 2025/26. Archer, who has faced a challenging spell with injuries, has only played white-ball cricket since recovering from a persistent elbow injury and hasn’t featured in a Test match since February 2021. Anderson, however, sees the pacer as essential to England’s Ashes campaign – if he’s willing and physically able to take on the demands of the red-ball game.

Anderson spoke about Archer’s potential, stating, “If we can keep him fit, the Ashes is a definite opportunity. The only worry is whether the injuries have scared him away from Test cricket and he thinks: ‘Can my body cope?’ But if Jofra works hard enough, and he’s managed well, he would be huge for us in the Ashes,” Anderson told The Guardian.

England’s current focus on building a formidable pace attack has also contributed to Anderson’s own retirement from international cricket, as the team prepares a roster of quicks fit for Australian conditions.

Beyond Archer, Anderson highlighted England’s promising crop of fast bowlers, including Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, and Matthew Potts, all of whom could be vital contributors to England’s attack in 2025/26.

Among the new generation of bowlers, Anderson praised Surrey’s Gus Atkinson, who debuted in the same match Anderson bowed out against the West Indies. Atkinson’s impact was immediate, with 12 wickets in the series, including a stunning seven-wicket haul in the first innings. Anderson noted that Atkinson, who has now accumulated 40 wickets in eight Tests, has ‘got it all.’

“I think we’ve got enough experience with Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Archer potentially, and then the guys that are coming in.

“Gus Atkinson has done really well, so have Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts. They’re getting experience all the time and if they’ve got 12 Tests under their belts that’s great. It doesn’t have to be 50 Tests.”

“He has got it all. Pace, skill and he picks up things really quickly. I’ve worked with him a little bit and he’ll say, ‘right, I want to learn an in-swinger’ and within 12 balls he’ll have it. That’s a great trait. He’s got amazing ability and a great temperament.”

Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand was knocked out in the opening round of Kumamoto Masters Japan with a defeat in straight games to their opponents from Chinese Taipei, here on Tuesday. The world No 20 Indian pair was brushed aside 16-21, 16-21 by Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Yin-Hui, ranked 24, in just 36 minutes in their women’s doubles round 32 of clash of the Super 500 tournament. This is the first time Yin-Hui and Yin-Hui have won against the Indian duo, who still lead the head-to-head contests 2-1.

The two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and world championship medallist Lakshya Sen are the two other Indians competing in the tournament and will begin their campaign on Wednesday.

V Sindhu and Lakshya Sen last competed on the BWF World Tour at the Denmark Open in the second week of October.

PV Sindhu, 19th in the latest badminton rankings for the women’s singles, lost to Paris 2024 Olympics bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia in the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open after defeating the People’s Republic of China’s then-world No. 7 Han Yue in the second round.

Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist and a former world champion, reached the final of the Malaysia Masters BWF Super 500 tournament in May. The Indian badminton player is still searching for her first title on the BWF World Tour since her victory at the Singapore Open in July 2022.

Lakshya Sen, who finished one win short of an Olympic medal at Paris 2024, is India’s lone entry in men’s singles at the Kumamoto Masters Japan. The world No. 17 men’s singles shuttler competed at the Arctic Open and the Denmark Open but is yet to win a match in the new Olympic cycle.

Champions Trophy Row Fallout: India’s Relation With Pakistan Predicted To Be “At Its Worst”

Published

The tussle between BCCI and Pakistan over Champions Trophy participation is still ongoing. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has informed the PCB that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy. That decision has resulted in a huge controversy. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will seek clarity from the ICC on hosting of the Champions Trophy since they have only been intimated that India will not travel for the tournament but there was no word on hybrid model being proposed.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has said the decision will mean that India and Pakistan sporting relationship will be at its worst.

“India have obviously announced that they would not be playing in Pakistan, looks like they’re going to play in Dubai. I do think by India not going to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, I think that relationship now could be an off-image, it has not been great for a long time and I think it is going to be at its worst. Potentially we might not see India play Pakistan for a long long time,” Vaughan said on Club Prairie Fire Podcast.

“It is a one thing I would really love to see  on a regular basis in Test match cricket. India vs Pakistan, if you can’t play it on your own backyard, play it here in Australia, we’ll host it in the UK,” said Vaughan.

“There are so many supporters in the world that idolises India and Pakistan, that series would be a huge success, wherever you play. Its sad that India would not be going to Pakistan, it is going to affect the game.”

A report in PTI suggested that the Champions Trophy can follow a Hybrid model where India would play its matches in Dubai or any other country.

“There is no talk about having the Champions Trophy on a Hybrid Model system as of now,” a reliable PCB source said.

A hybrid model was followed during the Asia Cup last year, when India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka while other matches were played in Pakistan.

“An email is to be sent to the ICC with the advice of its legal department in which the Board wanted clarifications from the ICC on the Indian decision,” the source said.

“As of now the entire situation is being gauged by the PCB. No decision has been taken on the next step. Yes the PCB is in touch with the government for consultation and directives if required,” the source added.
