Dipika-Harinder Win Mixed Pair Gold In Squash, Sourav Settles For Silver
Veterans Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu survived some anxious moments to clinch the mixed doubles gold, but Saurav Ghosal settled for singles silver on Thursday as Indian squash players recorded their best-ever performance at the Asian Games. Dipika and Harinder eked out a 11-10 11-10 win over Malaysian duo of Aifa Binti Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal in a tense 35 minute final to fetch India’s second gold medal in squash at the ongoing event. However, it was disappointment for India’s top player Ghosal as he lost to Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 7-11 in a little over an hour.
But that wouldn’t take sheen out of India’s brilliant outing in the squash competition in Hangzhou, where they bettered the country’s effort in the Incheon Games 2014. India had won a historic gold in the men’s team event nine years ago, with two silver and a bronze to boot with.
However, in the ongoing Games, India have won two gold, a silver and a bronze.
“I don’t always remember what happens on court. It’s a blur for both of us. We only remember the last point. We are more than happy. We are very proud of the fact we are here and won gold,” Dipika said after the win.
“Myself and Harinder have worked really, really hard to be here at this moment, to be part of this team and to win the gold. We are very humbled to be in this position that we are right now,” she said.
Both pairs were neck and neck in the opening game, with none of them able to hold on to the lead. Dipika kept fetching points with her fantastic forehand.
The Indians saved two game points before taking the first game after Aifa erred in hitting a forehand.
Major S Maniam, the former India coach, was present in the Malaysian camp.
Leading 9-3 in the second game, the Indian duo was on course for an easy win.
But the Malaysians had other plans as they capitalised on Dipika and Harinder’s slightly sluggish movement to take seven consecutive points and rise from 3-9 to 10-9.
The encounter then became more tense as the 10-9 point had to be played multiple times due to let (obstruction).
The 34-year-old Harinder then hit two backhand winners to seal the fixture.
Ghosal, who did not drop a game in this Games till the final, started the match trailing the Malaysian who built an 8-6 lead.
However, Ghosal played some fine forehands to make it 8-8 and eventually won the game.
But the Malaysian turned the table in the second game winning it 11-9, and it seemed to have affected the concentration of Ghosal.
In the third and fourth games, Ghosal hardly produced any fight and his backhand completely deserted him, with the Indian making a slew of errors.
Ghosal also found himself out of position several times in these two games, and lost points through obstruction.

“Questions Will Be Raised…”: Rohit Sharma Sent Brutal ‘Failures’ Warning After Australia Loss
Former cricketer Madan Lal believes Rohit Sharma’s dwindling form has started to reflect on his captaincy after India fell to a 10-wicket defeat against Australia in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit’s return to the Indian team was shrouded in colours of defeat after the pink ball continued to haunt the visitors at the Adelaide Oval. The 10-wicket defeat inflicted by Australia marked the fourth consecutive loss for Rohit as India’s Test captain. After his fearlessness lifted India to victory against England earlier this year, Rohit’s bat has resorted to silence ever since.
A sub-par series against Bangladesh and a mediocre string of scores against New Zealand have defined Rohit’s struggle to put runs on the board.
His lean form extended to Australia, as he was able to score just nine runs across both innings in Adelaide, even though he came down at number six spot, giving the opening slot for Rahul, who looked in more sublime touch in the first test at Perth.
“Questions will be raised on his form. He has had a lot of failures. He is a top-class player, but you have to score runs,” Madan Lal told ANI while addressing Rohit’s recent form.
Madan Lal believes even though Rohit is a world-class player, he needs to deliver with the bat to keep his critics in check, irrespective of the position he plays in.
“Sometimes, when your form is not good, it reflects on your captaincy. The form is one match away, but he has to score runs. No matter what position he plays, his runs are important because he is a world-class player. You can only stop criticising players by scoring runs,” he added.
During India’s historic 3-0 home series whitewash against New Zealand, Rohit contributed just 91 runs across three Test matches, averaging 15.17. While facing Bangladesh, Rohit amassed a mere 42 runs in two Test matches while averaging just 10.50.
With India in dire need of its high-flying opener to regain his purple patch, Rohit would be hungry to put runs across his name in the third BGT Test.

Rohit Sharma Reveals Real Reason Behind Decision To Ban Fans From Team India Practice
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma© AFP
Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma revealed the reason behind the team management banning supporters from attending the net sessions during the ongoing Test series against Australia. Rohit made it clear after the second Test match in Adelaide that the practice sessions are private and they are not in favour of any kind of public intervention. Ahead of the pink-ball Test, the Indian practice session was open to the public but it turned quite chaotic with some players facing insensitive comments from the crowd.
“You know, the net sessions are very private, and this was the first time ever I saw so many people during the nets. And when you’re training, when you’re practising, there are a lot of conversation that happens, and those conversations are very private. We don’t want anyone to hear those conversations. It is as simple as that because there’s a lot of planning,” Rohit said in the press conference.
Rohit even joked that if the fans are interested in watching them, they can come during the Tests.
“There’s a lot of talking that happens. And the crowds are very close to that practice facility. There are five days of Test cricket. They can come and watch us there,” he said.
Following a comprehensive ten-wicket win over India in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval to level the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 1-1, Australia have moved back to the top of the 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship standings.
The Pat Cummins-led side have their points percentage at 60.71 to go past both South Africa and India in the championship table, with the win at Adelaide their ninth victory of the ongoing cycle.
On the other hand, the heavy defeat has meant Rohit Sharma-led India have dropped down to third place, and see its points percentage fall to 57.29, after being 61.11 post their 295-run win in Perth.
India now needs to win its remaining three Tests against Australia in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to have a chance at entering their third straight WTC final, to be held at Lord’s next year.

Kylian Mbappe ‘Can Do Better’ As Troubled Real Madrid Visit Atalanta
Real Madrid usually deliver in the Champions League when the pressure is on and their trip to face Atalanta on Tuesday is shaping up to be a crucial clash for the troubled holders. The record 15-time winners have lost three of their first five matches and find themselves 24th in the standings, with places 25 to 36 eliminated at the end of the group phase. Carlo Ancelotti’s side travel to Bergamo this week before hosting RB Salzburg and then visiting French outfit Brest with their future in the competition on the line.
In-form Atalanta lead Serie A and have not been beaten yet in the Champions League, sitting fifth.
Madrid, meanwhile, have been beset by a string of problems including adaptation difficulties for superstar summer signing Kylian Mbappe and several key players sidelined through injury.
Italian coach Ancelotti has tried to ease the pressure on 25-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain striker Mbappe, who has scored 11 goals in 21 games since joining Los Blancos.
“He isn’t at his best level, but we have to give him time to adapt,” said Ancelotti last week. “He can do better and he’s working to do that.”
While Mbappe’s goal rate is not a cause for particular concern, his performances have left plenty to be desired given his status as one of the world’s top players.
Recent penalty misses against Liverpool in the Champions League and Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, both matches finishing in defeats, exacerbated the focus on Mbappe, who has also had off-field problems.
The striker was not part of two recent France squads, is battling with PSG over an unpaid salary claim and is also reported to be under investigation in Sweden in a rape case.
“I received nothing, no summons. I read the same thing as everyone else. The Swedish government hasn’t said anything — I’m not involved,” Mbappe told Canal+ on Sunday.
Important absences
Madrid have lost key defenders Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao to long-term knee injury problems.
Even midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, whom Ancelotti has turned to as an emergency defender in the past, has also been out hurt, only returning recently.
Madrid will also be without Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba for the visit to face Atalanta.
In the good news column they are set to have Brazilian wing wizards Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes back fit and available.
However Vinicius’ expected return re-opens a debate which was in full flow before he suffered a hamstring injury a fortnight ago.
The Ballon d’Or runner-up likes to play on the left wing, which is also Mbappe’s favourite spot.
After using Mbappe as a centre-forward for much of the season to date, Ancelotti finally swapped them over for one match before Vinicius was hurt.
The coach cited the French forward’s break from international duty as the reason to put him on the wing, whereas Vinicius had returned from playing in South America.
Ancelotti suggested Mbappe’s struggles were not just down to him but an issue of consistency affecting the whole team.
Although he accepted criticism for Madrid’s form, having lost five games across all competitions already, after stumbling just twice in the whole of last season, Ancelotti said his team would fight.
“It’s not a funeral — we’re still fighting in all competitions,” said Ancelotti last week, following Madrid’s stumble at Athletic, the fifth of those defeats.
“We have to be optimistic, keeping in mind the problems we’re having and have had.
“But we have to be optimistic because we have a quality squad. We have not been able to find our best form, but I am convinced we will sooner or later.”
With a thumping 3-0 win over Girona on Saturday in La Liga under their belt, following that up with a show of force at Atalanta would start to ease concerns in the Spanish capital.
