With Virat Kohli-MS Dhoni Reference, Ex-India Star Highlights Shubman Gill’s Biggest Quality

Published

By

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has backed young batter Shubman Gill hto become the next big thing in world cricket, praising the youngster for his excellent game awareness. Gill, who made his India debut in 2019, was recently elevated to the leadership role in white-ball cricket, having established himself as a vital cog in the team across formats. Chopra feels Gill has the instincts to understand the pulse of the game, which was also the case with former India captain MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli when they first burst onto the scene.

“The biggest quality of Shubman is that he understands the pulse of the game. Some players are very quick to understand. Some understand eventually. Some never understand. So, the greats you see, they understand very quickly. So, Virat Kohli understood the pulse of the game very quickly. Mahendra Singh Dhoni understood the pulse of batting in ODIs very quickly,” said Aakash in a podcast with Raj Shamani.

“Shubman Gill understands the pulse of the game. He understands 100% where the game is going. Where can I go? Where can I take it? How can it run according to me? He is absolutely brilliant. He is top-class about himself,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gill is among prominent players who will be rested for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh starting October 7 as part of BCCI’s workload management policy. Gill, India’s No.3 in Test matches, is a vital cog in the team’s top-order alongside Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal and is expected to play all 10 Tests this season. Apart from Gill, a few more important players will also be rested keeping the the three- Test series against New Zealand in mind.

India will start their upcoming international season with a two-Test series against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 19 followed by the second match in Kanpur starting September 27.

“Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi) and 13 (Hyderabad). Now first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16.

“So with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break,” a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Cuts A ‘Sorry Figure’ Against Pacers At Nets – Report’s Big Claim

Indian cricket team batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has established himself as a solid talent in the past couple of years and he is expected to take the field during the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai starting Thursday. However, according to a report on Sportstar, Jaiswal had a tough time facing the fast bowlers during the net session at the M Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. The report claimed that Jaiswal cut a ‘sorry figure’ against both Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah as the youngster kept missing deliveries outside the off-stump. However, the left-hander did look quite comfortable against the spinners and the report added that he used the sweep quite well to counter the threat of the spinners.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will have some milestones to chase as he prepares to take on Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series at Chennai from Thursday.

The two-match series will kick off on September 19 in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The second long-format game will begin on September 27 in Kanpur. In his first Test assignment, head coach Gautam Gambhir will be keen on securing a series win.

The Indian skipper has enjoyed a fine run of form in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 so far, scoring 700 runs in nine matches and 16 innings at an average of 46.66, with three centuries and three fifties. His best score is 131. He is the 12th highest run-getter in the competition so far.

Rohit has two milestones to look for during the series. Getting to the first milestone will seal his legacy as the country’s finest six-hitter. With 84 sixes in Tests, Rohit is at 11th place among top six-hitters in the world. He just needs eight more big hits to displace legendary Virender Sehwag (91) to become team’s leading six-hitter in Test cricket.

England skipper Ben Stokes (131), former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Brendon McCullum (107) and iconic Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist (100) are the top three sixes in the world.

If Rohit goes on a big six-hitting spree in these two games, he could also become only the fourth overall and first Indian batter to have smashed 100 sixes in Tests.

James Anderson Set For T20 Return After A Decade? Report Reveals Star Could Earn…

Published

By

England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, James Anderson, has caught the attention of Major League Cricket (MLC) as a potential recruit for its 2025 season, following recent hints at a possible return to white-ball cricket. Senior figures from at least one unnamed MLC franchise are exploring whether the 42-year-old fast-bowling legend would be interested in participating in the growing T20 tournament in the United States, reported BBC Sport.

Anderson, who retired from international cricket after amassing 704 Test wickets, recently joined the England backroom staff as a fast-bowling mentor.

However, his comments about potentially returning to white-ball cricket have piqued the interest of MLC, which has successfully attracted several high-profile names, including Australia captain Pat Cummins and stars like Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head.

According to a BBC report, should Anderson sign on, he could earn around 1,35,000 euros (Rs 1.49 crore approx.) for a short stint in the competition, which is set to expand from 19 to 34 games in 2025.

Despite his decade-long focus on red-ball cricket, Anderson has expressed confidence in his ability to still perform in the shorter format, even though his last T20 match was in 2014 for Lancashire in the T20 Blast.

MLC, backed by influential figures such as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, has made clear its ambitions to lure top English talent to the league. World Cup winners Liam Plunkett and Jason Roy have already featured in previous editions, with Roy signing a lucrative two-year deal worth 3,00,000 euros with the Los Angeles Knight Riders.
