In Madhya Pradesh, the AAP has fielded Anurag Yadav from Indore-1 where the BJP has declared its national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya as its candidate
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released the second list of candidates for poll-bound Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The list, declared late on Monday, has 29 names for Madhya Pradesh and 12 for Chhattisgarh.
The party on September 8 announced its first list of 10 candidates each for both states.
In Madhya Pradesh, the AAP has fielded Anurag Yadav from Indore-1 where the BJP has declared its national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya as its candidate. The seat is currently held by the Congress. In Bhopal Uttar from where Congress’ Arif Aqueel is the sitting MLA, the AAP has fielded Mohd. Saood. In Narela, a stronghold of State Minister Vishwas Sarang, Rahisa Begam Malik will contest on the AAP ticket.
The party has also announced a candidate from Shivpuri whose four-time sitting MLA, State Minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia, has recently announced that she would not be contesting due to health issues. The Congress, which rules Chhattisgarh and is the principal Opposition party in Madhya Pradesh, besides being an INDIA bloc partner of the AAP, is yet to declare any candidate for either state.
Former BJP MLA Mamta Meena, who joined the AAP recently in Delhi, has been fielded from Chachaura seat in MP’s Guna, will now fight elections from there as an AAP candidate.
The list also features seven candidates from reserved seats — three Scheduled Tribes and four Scheduled Caste seats. While in Chhattisgarh, the AAP has covered almost all of the state, including two from capital Raipur — Raipur Gramin and Raipur West.
Notably, despite the politics being largely bipolar and the Congress scoring a landslide win in last Assembly polls, the non-Congress, non-BJP parties collectively bagged an encouraging chunk in the 2018 vote share.
AAP’s national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who addressed two public rallies in Madhya Pradesh and two in Chhattisgarh so far, has made several poll promises for both states.

Karnataka Government Withdraws Old Hubbali Police Station Riots Case Against AIMIM Leaders, Faces BJP Flak

“The cabinet has the powers to withdraw certain cases. Based on the home minister’s discretion, such decisions can be taken. I will look into the matter. The BJP only fights for false causes, do they ever fight for the truth,” asked Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah
In a move that has invited criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Karnataka cabinet has withdrawn the Old Hubbali Police Station riots case, despite strong objections from its law department, police department and prosecution.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah tried to defend the move. “The cabinet has the powers to withdraw certain cases. Based on the home minister’s discretion, such decisions can be taken. I will look into the matter. The BJP only fights for false causes, do they ever fight for the truth,” he asked.
However, a Bengaluru-based advocate has written to Karnataka Chief Secretary, objecting to Hubbali riots case being withdrawn. Girish Bharadwaj has quoted the Supreme Court order in Sheonandan Paswan vs State of Bihar case saying such riot cases can’t be withdrawn.
THE CASE
The First Information Report (FIR) registered at Old Hubbali Police Station against All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leaders Mohammed Arif and others was withdrawn after Deputy CM DK Shivakumar wrote to the government last year requesting the case be dropped.
Arif and other AIMIM leaders were accused of leading a mob that attacked the police and threatened to storm the Old Hubbali Police Station on the night of April 16, 2022 to protest against a derogatory social media post. They later went on a rampage, damaging police vehicles and public property. They were booked under serious charges such as attempt to murder, rioting, among others. Even charges under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were slapped against Arif and 138 others.
The BJP has accused the Congress government of practising appeasement politics. “The Congress always stands for appeasement and vote bank politics. Time and again, they have been exposed. Why can’t they give similar consideration to all sections of society? How can they withdraw the Hubbali riots case,” asked former deputy CM Ashwathnarayan.
43 CASES WITHDRAWN
The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday decided to withdraw 43 cases in the state, but 42 of those are not of serious nature, with many of them against farmers and Kannada activists for protesting, blocking roads and unlawful assembly, etc.
Cases against BJP leader CT Ravi and Congress Minister MC Sudhakar, too, have been dropped. They were booked for protesting and blocking highways and roads. Only the old Hubbali police station case had serious charges.

This year’s rallies are particularly significant as they come ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, which will take place before the end of the year
The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) are set for their mega annual Dussehra rallies in Mumbai on Saturday. This year, Shinde’s faction will hold its rally at Azad Maidan, while Thackeray will lead the rally at Shivaji Park.
As they did last year, both factions have released video trailers for their rallies, asserting their claim to be the “real Shiv Sena” and continuing the legacy of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.
The Dussehra rally tradition was started by Balasaheb Thackeray, who used these events to deliver important messages. This year’s rallies are particularly significant as they come ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, which will take place before the end of the year.
With elections approaching, both factions aim to gather as many supporters as possible for their rallies.
On social media platform X, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena party shared a 40-second animated video featuring caricatures of both Shinde and Thackeray.

Amid SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav Vs Yogi’s BJP Government Tussle, UP’s JP Narayan Centre Faces Neglect
Bracketed among the pet projects of the former Samajwadi Party (SP) government, the Jayaprakash Narayan Interpretation Centre (JPNIC), a museum dedicated to the iconic socialist leader and freedom fighter on the banks of river Gomti in Lucknow, is a shambles. Built at a staggering cost of over Rs 800 crore, this unfinished structure has been abandoned for more than seven years, with weeds overtaking its expensive tiles and world-class amenities, making it a safe haven for drug addicts.
The JPNIC came in the news as SP leaders clashed with the UP Police because they were stopped on their way to JPNIC to garland the statue on Narayan’s birth anniversary on Thursday. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav called police action “the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) attempt to attack democracy” and do “dirty politics”. The BJP called the SP’s protest “childish”.
SP’S PET PROJECT
Entangled in political turmoil, the JPNIC, once envisioned as a world-class facility, stands in neglect. The JPNIC was meant to be a state-of-the-art cultural and convention hub in Lucknow.
The construction began in 2012 under the SP government, and by 2017, Rs 860 crore had been spent, completing around 80% of the project.

Real estate giant Shalimar built the 17-floor structure spanning across 18.6 acres, which boasts of facilities such as a museum dedicated to Narayan, a luxury hotel with 107 rooms, a gym, spa, salon, restaurants, a 2,000-seat convention hall, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a seven-floor car park for 591 vehicles, a museum dedicated to Narayan’s life and ideologies, a badminton court, lawn tennis facilities and even a helipad on the top floor.
The project came to a standstill in 2017 when the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government ordered an inquiry into alleged irregularities in the construction. The halt in work left the building unfinished, with its completion and inauguration still pending after seven years.
“This centre was supposed to honour Narayan and his socialist ideals, but it has become a casualty of political rivalry,” said a local resident. Another remarked, “People’s money has gone to waste. It’s heartbreaking to see bushes growing between expensive tiles and drug addicts gathering here at night.”
The SP has repeatedly alleged that the BJP government is deliberately neglecting the centre, with claims that the Yogi government plans to sell it to a private company. “The BJP doesn’t want people to understand socialism, which is why they are keeping this centre in ruins,” an SP spokesperson said.

THE BEGINNING
Political row over the JPNIC picked up on Thursday late evening when the SP chief launched a fierce attack on the ruling BJP for barricading the entrance ahead of their plan to garland the statue.
“JPNIC is the museum of socialists and has the statue of Narayan. There are things inside on how we can understand socialism,” said Yadav, who visited the JPNIC on the eve of Jayaprakash Jayanti after learning about the barricading.
Yadav alleged that the BJP government in UP had installed tin sheets in front of the main gate of JPNIC to prevent his entry. “What is the government hiding by erecting these tin sheds? Is it possible that they are getting ready to sell it, or want to give it to someone,” Yadav asked.
In a video shared online, Yadav asked a painter to write ‘Samajwadi Party Zindabad’ (Long live Samajwadi Party) on the tin sheets. The party also posted a clip showing workers erecting tin sheets at the JPNIC gate. “The BJP government is constantly attacking democracy. This anti-people government has insulted great men by ruining development work like JPNIC built in Lucknow. Socialists will not bow down to these dictators,” the party stated on X.
The SP chief also announced that he would pay tribute to the statue of the great socialists at the centre. “We will decide on the programme tomorrow (on Friday). For how long will they keep it barred behind tin sheds,” he had stated.

CHAOTIC FRIDAY
On Friday, Uttar Pradesh woke up to commotion as barricades were erected around the SP office and the residence of its chief Yadav on Vikramaditya Marg in Lucknow. Heavy police presence was seen at both locations to prevent Yadav from visiting the JPNIC, as he had promised on Thursday.
The situation escalated when SP activists marched towards JPNIC in the morning, with some climbing over the barricades outside Yadav’s residence. However, tensions eased after the SP chief garlanded Narayan’s statue at his home.
– भाजपा ने श्रद्धांजलि… pic.twitter.com/oqAO6g8Qu8

AN APPEAL TO NITISH KUMAR
“Many socialists in the government are helping it continue its rule. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar emerged from Narayan’s movement. This is a chance for Kumar to withdraw support from a government that is not allowing a socialist to pay tribute to Narayan on his birth anniversary,” said Yadav.
WHEN FORMER CM HAD TO CLIMB THE 8-FT-HIGH WALL
However, this was not the first time when the SP chief was stopped from garlanding the statue of Narayan. Last year, too, a high-voltage drama was staged when SP chief was prevented from garlanding the statue. As the gates remained shut, he climbed an eight-feet-high wall to gain access to the statue of the freedom fighter along with other SP leaders and workers amid chaos and sloganeering. Police tried to stop SP workers and leaders from entering the premises and also used mild force to disperse the crowd.
BJP’s COUNTER
UP minister Suresh Khanna took a jibe at the SP. “Samajwadi Party is a transformer that is not working. People will not like it. The BJP is a good transformer. People are with us.”
BJP spokesperson Manish Shukla also criticised Yadav. “Yadav should answer why SP leaders are only active in the dark of night. His action is childish.”
