‘Speaking In One Voice’: NDA May Release List of Spokespersons Ahead Of Budget Session

The decision to come up with a panel of spokespersons was taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the last special session of Parliament, said the move could help reflect any decision of the government effectively across all states and through all parties

Ahead of the upcoming budget session of Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is likely to release a list of spokespersons across parties, according to sources.

“The list of NDA spokespersons is expected to be released before the budget session,” a top source told News18.

It is also indicated that unlike during the time of BJP’s the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, currently, there is no need for the post of NDA convener. It may be recalled that during the PM Vajpayee-led government, current Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu was the NDA convener.

The decision to come up with a panel of spokespersons was taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the last special session of Parliament, said the move could help reflect any decision of the government effectively across all states and through all parties.

“It is a different scenario in 2024. With so many alliance partners in the government, the message should be clear that it is collective responsibility and collective decision-making. This is why the need to have all voices speak in one tone,” the source said.

The opposition, much stronger after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections compared to 2014 and 2019, is attacking the government with renewed vigour. In such a scenario, it becomes even more important for the NDA to show its strength.

The NDA’s strength will be put to test immediately in the upcoming budget session, where various political parties within the NDA would want to talk about the benefits of the budget.

After enjoying a full majority in 2014 and 2019, with the BJP having absolute numbers by itself, in 2024, the BJP had to form a government at the Centre with the support of several allies of the NDA. Among the principal allies are Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with 16 MPs and Janata Dal United (JDU) with 12 MPs.

Modi, as the leader of the NDA, and 71 members of his cabinet took oath on June 9. Representation was given to all allies, with Rammohan Naidu (TDP) and Lalan Singh (JDU) being part of Modi’s cabinet. Apart from this, the alliance party members who were sworn include HD Kumaraswamy from Janata Dal Secular (JDS), Anupriya Patel from Apna Dal, Jain Chaudhary from Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), among others.

In the last few years, not all has been well between the BJP and its allies such as the JDU and TDP. While the JDU has done a number of turns and U-turns. Chandrababu Naidu, who was with the government in 2014, walked out of the NDA in 2018 over the unfulfilled promise of the Andhra Pradesh reorganisation act. He is back with the NDA in 2024.

‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ Will Remind People of Cong’s ‘Dictatorial Mindset’: BJP

The BJP’s reaction came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the government’s decision to observe June 25, the day on which the Emergency was declared in 1975, as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’. (PTI)

“The contribution of those who spent time in jail and suffered torture during the period of Emergency can never be forgotten,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said

The BJP on Friday said the commemoration of June 25 as ’Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ every year will remind people of the Congress’ “dictatorial mindset” and also pay tribute to those who suffered torture and sacrificed their lives fighting against the imposition of Emergency by the Indira Gandhi government about 50 years ago.

The BJP’s reaction came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the government’s decision to observe June 25, the day on which the Emergency was declared in 1975, as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to commemorate the “massive contributions” of those who endured ”inhuman pains” of the period.

Commenting on the development, Defence Minister and former BJP president Rajnath Singh wrote on X, “The circumstances that arose due to the Emergency and the kind of repressive cycle that was carried out then in the history of Indian democracy are still fresh in the memory of the people of the country.”

He said the Centre has declared June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to remind the attempt that was made to strangle the Constitution by imposition of Emergency in India and also to pay tribute to the agitators who fought against it and protected the democratic rights.

“The contribution of those who spent time in jail and suffered torture during the period of Emergency can never be forgotten,” he added.

In a post on X, Union Minister and BJP chief JP Nadda said June 25, 1975 was the “black day” when the “dictatorial mindset” of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency on the country by ”murdering” the democracy enshrined in the Constitution.

“This day will remind us of the sacrifices and martyrdom of all our great men who fought against this dictatorial mindset of the Congress, endured torture and died for the protection of the Constitution and restoration of democracy,” Nadda said.

“I express my gratitude towards the prime minister for this decision which would remind us of the importance of democracy every year,” he added.

In a post on X, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha hailed the government’s decision as “historic” and said it will give people an opportunity to understand the incident and the force behind repealing of the Constitution.

“Will Rahul Gandhi welcome it? Will Jairam Ramesh speak on it? Or will they be hurt by this decision?” Sinha asked as he slammed the Congress for the imposition of the Emergency by its government in 1975.

The Congress did politics with the “authoritarian mindset” in the past and it is still doing the same today, the BJP MP charged.

Completely Wrong to Misinterpret Apex Court Order on Kejriwal: Kiren Rijiju

Rijiju said, “There are reports that Kejriwal has got relief. This is not true. The Supreme Court has vindicated the action taken by the ED”

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday said it was “completely wrong to misinterpret” the apex court’s order granting interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money-laundering case, after the AAP termed it a “victory of truth” and ”defeat of the BJP’s conspiracy”.

The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to Kejriwal in a money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the alleged excise policy scam but he will remain in jail as the CBI had arrested him in a related matter.

A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta referred to a larger bench, preferably of five judges, for in-depth consideration of three questions on the aspect of ”need and necessity of arrest” under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Rijiju said, “There are reports that Kejriwal has got relief. This is not true. The Supreme Court has vindicated the action taken by the ED.” He said the Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Kejriwal in a money laundering case filed by the ED while he was in jail in connection with a corruption case filed by the CBI.

The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday described the interim bail to Kejriwal in the ED’s money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam as a ”victory of truth” and ”defeat of the BJP’s conspiracy” against him.

Rijiju asserted that the Supreme Court had not said that Kejriwal’s arrest was illegal. The arrest was as per norms, he said.

“The case against Kejriwal is of a serious nature and his prosecution will continue. It is completely wrong to misinterpret the apex court order as if Kejriwal has been honourably discharged in the case,” Rijiju said.

Kejriwal was also arrested by the CBI on June 26 in connection with the corruption case related to the alleged excise policy scam. The plea challenging his arrest by the CBI is pending before the Delhi High Court. The matter relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which has now been scrapped.
