World Championship bronze medallist boxer Parveen Hooda assured India of a medal and also grabbed a Paris Olympic quota by moving into the 57kg semifinals in the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday. Parveen, who won the bronze medal in the 63kg at the 2022 World Boxing Championships, moved past Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova by unanimous verdict in the quarterfinal. However, Nikhat Zareen, competing in the women’s 50kg category, had to settle for bronze after losing to Rakast Chuthamat of Thailand.

The Thai girl won 2-1 on split decision in the semifinal contest. Zareen had won the first round, but her rival emerged the victor in the two following rounds.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaismine Lamboria, however, crashed out of the 60kg contest after conceding a second round RSC (referee stops contest) to North Korean boxer Won Ungyong in her quarterfinal bout.

Parveen, the reigning Asian champion was in her elements from the word go, using her long arms to throw punches from a distance and control the proceedings.

She switched between the left jab and the right cross to unnerve the 21-year-old Uzbek.

Parveen fought a strategic bout as after going on the offensive in the opening round, she waited for Turdibekova to come forward, only to pummel her with accurate scoring punches.

Turdibekova did make a strong comeback by landing several blows on Parveen, but it wasn’t enough to convince the judges to rule the bout in her favour.

After winning the first round 5-0, Jaismine asked for her headgear to be adjusted but once that was done, the Indian lost concentration as she was hit by a series of hooks and jabs by Won.

Jaismine lost energy, becoming a standing target for Won as the referee gave the Indian three standing counts in less than a minute before calling off the contest.

The two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg ) and Narender Berwal (+92kg) have already secured Olympic quotas in their respective categories.

In women’s events, the semifinalists in the 50kg, 54kg, 57kg, and 60kg, as well as the finalists in the 66kg and 75kg, will qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The gold and silver medallists in each of the seven weight divisions in the men’s event will receive Olympic quotas.

India take on Bangladesh in the first Test encounter at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai starting Thursday. The Rohit Sharma-led side will return to action after more than a month-long break and questions remain over what team composition India will go with in this game. According to a report by Press Trust Of India (PTI), head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Rohit Sharma is expected to go with three spinners – Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. That means Axar Patel will miss out of selection. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will be the pacers in the encounter.

On the batting front, Pant is expected to make his Test return after a gap of almost two years. Dhruv Jurel, who impressed his debut series against England, will be benched in that case.

Rohit Sharma and Co had another extensive training session in the build up to the first Test against Bangladesh with all 16 squad members turning for practice at the Chepauk here on Monday.

After a day off, the India squad members took part in their third training session since their arrival here last week. The first Test begins on Thursday.

As it is often the case, Virat Kohli was among the first set of batters to hit the nets. In the adjacent net was southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal as both him and Kohli faced Jasprit Bumrah and home hero R Ashwin. The next set of batters included skipper Rohit, Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan, the last named player arriving here after taking part in the second round Duleep Trophy match in Anantapur. The captain focussed on playing spinners keeping Bangladesh’s slow bowling attack in mind.

Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and pacer Mohammed Siraj too faced local bowlers and significant amount of throwdowns.

The practice pitch at the main square offered a decent amount of bounce.

India will have two more practice sessions scheduled before the series opener against Bangladesh, who are riding on the confidence of their series sweep in Pakistan.

India Test newcomer Akash Deep has been given a special welcome by India star batter Virat Kohli. Pacer Akash Deep, who has been picked in India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, took to Instagram to reveal that Kohli had gifted one of his bats ahead of the series. Notably, Akash Deep is not the first player to receive such a gift, with the likes of Rinku Singh and Vijaykumar Vyshak revealing recently that even they had been lucky enough to be gifted so by Kohli.

Posting a picture of one of Kohli’s MRF-sponsored bats, Akash Deep captioned, “Thanq bhaiya (Thank you big brother)” on Instagram.

The pacer is also teammates with Virat Kohli at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) since 2022, during which the team has reached the playoff stage twice.

Akash Deep made his debut against England in the fourth Test of five earlier in 2024. He made a tremendous impression on debut, running through the England top order in the first innings. He picked three wickets, dismissing Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope.

It remains the only Test of his career.

After showing continued promise in the domestic circuit, Akash Deep has been given another shot in whites by India. With Mohammed Shami still not injured, Deep has been named.

Meanwhile, Kohli will return to red-ball action for the first time since January 2024, when he played against South Africa. That has been Kohli’s only Test match all year, as he chose to miss the home series against England due to the birth of his second child.

Kohli is aiming to become the fourth Indian to reach 9,000 Test runs. The 35-year-old is only 152 runs away from the milestone. He would join Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in an elite list of Indians to reach the run tally.

Virat Kohli Craze Takes Over In Pakistan’s Champions Cup, Fan Waves India Star’s Jersey

Amid the ongoing Pakistan Champions Cup in Faislabad, a fan was spotted waving star India batter Virat Kohli‘s jersey at the Iqbal Stadium. The incident took place during a match between Markhors and Stallions on Sunday, with Salman Ali Agha batting alongside Iftikhar Ahmed. On the third ball of the 29th over, spinner Mehran Mumtaz looped a ball outside leg stump, which Agha converted into a boundary, following a well-timed straight drive.

As the camera was suddenly panned towards the crowd, a fan holding an Indian team jersey, with Virat Kohli’s name and number on the back, went viral.

Meanwhile, Kohli will be having some milestones to unlock as he prepares for the first Test against Bangladesh at Chennai, with an aim to overtake his peers Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson‘s recent success in the longest format.

Virat will be aiming to get to the 9,000 run mark in Test cricket, as he is just 152 runs away from the milestone. It will make him the fourth Indian to hit the tally after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar. In 113 Tests, he has scored 8,848 runs in 191 innings at an average of 49.15, with 29 centuries and 30 fifties. His best score is 254. Sachin Tendulkar is India’s highest run-getter in Tests with 15,921 runs in 200 matches.

The veteran batter is also the fourth-highest run-getter in international cricket history, with 26,942 runs in 533 matches and 591 innings at an average of 53.35, with 80 centuries and 140 fifties to his name. Just 58 more runs will get him to 27,000 international runs.

Coming back to the match, Zahid Mahmood‘s five-for led Markhors to a crushing 126-run win over Stallions in Faislabad.

Chasing 232, Stallions were cruising at 79/2 at one stage with Babar Azam looking in imperious touch.

Babar slammed Shahnawaz Dahani for five consecutive fours, and ended up scoring 45 off as many balls.

However, Stallions lost their remaining eight wickets for 26.
